The following day was a Sunday, allotting plenty of time for Bryson and the others to take care of business outside of the Bastion. Wendel LeAnce had given them Sundays to roam Brilliance since the weavineers had time off. Limone had stayed underground today, electing to proctor a few weavineers at Steel Field.
Gracie led Bryson, Lilu, Frederick, and a cloaked Thusia through a wealthy neighborhood. He hadnât visited this sector of Brilliance, so he was shocked to see sprawling yards of green, oak trees, and gated manors that were constructed more like the traditional buildings across the world. They were only three to four stories high, stretching to the sides rather than reaching into the sky.
âBecause of Uncle Nyemasâs critical role in convincing Lilu to study in Brilliance a couple of years ago, the LeAnce family gave him a home here,â Gracie said as they walked down a chalk-white sidewalk. Unlike in the heart of the city, it was clear this pavement was washed regularly. âBut they only recently gave it to him, as more travolters were built.â
âNo offense, Gracie, but arenât you supposed to be helping us get into the sewers?â Bryson asked.
âYes, and doing so requires visiting my uncleâs house first.â
They passed several gated properties before finally reaching a villa constructed of some kind of smooth, sandy brown stone. It sat at the center of a flat yard, with a lone pathway cutting between two nearly identical pebble ponds before reaching the buildingâs twin front doors.
A pair of guards greeted Gracie, Lilu, and Bryson by name before opening the front gate, eyeing Frederick and the cloaked figure as they passed. The sky was dark for midday, signaling a chance of storms. Bryson picked up the pace, feeling droplets hit his face.
Gracie retrieved a key from her pocket and unlocked the door, welcoming her friends to a vaulted foyer with archways to the right, left, and straight ahead. Two flights of stairs stretched up the sidewalls to an overlook above, where a brilliant chandelier of Intelights bathed the space in a white light.
Frederick closed the door behind the group, and Bryson gaped at the beauty. It was different than what he was accustomed to. He may have spent his past few years in the gaudy palace of one of the wealthiest families in the world, but he found himself preferring the muted luxury seen here.
A pudgy man in a bathrobe appeared from a hallway that branched away from the foyer, waddling onto the overlook. He paused at the center and surveyed his guests, adjusting his golden spectacles. âHas my niece briefed all of you on the rules?â he asked.
âWe donât even know what weâre doing here,â Bryson said.
âBryson hasnât done this before,â Lilu said.
Jugtah gazed at Gracie. âWhy must you be so difficult?â
âBecause I like to mess with you.â
Turning on his heels, he headed for the staircase to the left. âVery well, then,â he said while descending to the main floor. He paused at the bottom, eyeing the woman in the hooded cloak.
